Artist statement

Lasting growth over the years

My aim in painting is to create simple forms that leave lasting impressions when strengthened by discipline and tempered by exquisite care. These objectives become realized through broad unadorned shapes of composition expressed in soft but suggestive colors. Such conveys to me the hidden realms of significant beauty that may be present but often concealed and only discovered through artistic endeavor. Discovery is always new but continues to surprise and remains ever present over the years.

Many objects inspire me: aged cragged lines etched into mountains of limestone; the reddish brown clay formations in the foothills of the Alleghenies; the greenish blue hues of the Blue Ridge of Virginia; Asian screens with their mysteries of nature; still life objects once moribund but rendered alive once they are touched by color and juxtaposition--all these and more serve as vehicles for my painting.

Watercolor and acrylic represent the media I currently employ.  I participate in exhibitions, workshops and painting classes and especially enjoy learning applications of new techniques in order to express my personal vision and touch developed over the years.
